Calling trout habitat surveyors!

Interested in helping out a local Trout Unlimited chapter and spending a Saturday on the Upper South Fork of the Siletz? The Bluebacks are performing spawn surveys for steelhead redds and snowkel surveys to determine if juvenile salmon and steelhead are using the SF Siletz and its tributaries as rearing habitat. The Bluebacks hope to engage the community in "citizen science" to collect data on fish populations and provide educational opportunities for community members.

They are seeking volunteers to participate in these spawn surveys, where groups meet in Corvallis and carpool to the survey sites. Surveys will involve walking/wading 1-2 miles of the reaches being monitored and looking for steelhead redds. The trips take about a half day (lunch provided by Bluebacks) and will provide participants with principles of fish biology and the opportunity to see native steelhead in their natal streams. Afterwards, volunteers can make the short trip to  visit the nearby Valley of the Giants trail to view some nice coastal Old Growth stands.

There are still slots open for the following dates:

  • May 3rd
  • May 17th
  • May 31st
