  • SMART®  - Sexual Misconduct Awareness and Response Trainings : February 20, February 22, March 3

Dear OSU Community,

Women in Policy invites you to participate in the Sexual Misconduct Awareness and Response Training which we are organizing with two other graduate student organizations, Women in Marine Science and Women in Science. The training is free and open to the entire OSU community.

As graduate students, we are aware that sexual harassment and misconduct are issues we need to talk about. In this training, we aim to facilitate 1) a student-focused, direct discussion specifically targeting sexual misconduct and harassment, and 2) creating community and discussion in the OSU community.

To lead the training, we have hired Aili Johnston, founder of Willamette Public Health. Aili has been on contract with the US Forest Service for over three years to deliver sexual harassment and misconduct trainings to their staff. Aili’s fieldwork-specific experience and content contributed to our decision to hire Willamette Public Health. In addition, she's an OSU alumna and is largely integrated in the graduate student community. She has listened to many graduate students who have shared experiences of sexual harassment and this was the impetus for crafting training in direct response to the expressed concerns / needs of students.

The 4-hour workshop will be held 3 times: February 20 (8:30 am-12:30 am), February 22 (12:30 pm-4:30 pm), and March 3 (10 am-2:30 pm). Food and refreshments will be provided (food will be served 30 minutes before the start of the February 20 and February 22 workshops). Registration can be completed at this link:

The training consists of four parts: Recognize, Prevent, Support, and Report. The workshop will be customized to provide information on all potential settings students and faculty might find themselves in: lab research - both on campus and in labs outside of OSU, field research - in the state or nation-wide, conference attendances, research taking place in remote areas, research on various vessels operated by OSU contractors, etc.

Please distribute the information and the flyer for the trainings with your students and colleagues.

We hope that you will consider joining us in our efforts to empower the OSU community.
